Newtownards Sailing Club is a small, friendly and informal club on the shore of the very scenic Strangford Lough, some three miles south of the town of Newtownards. Dinghy racing takes place on Thursday evenings and Sunday afternoons during the season. Dinghies can be launched at all states of the tide and there is a jetty usable by cruisers approx 3 hours either side of high water. There is an average 2.5 metres of water above the slipway at high tide. The prevailing on-shore wind and large area of waist-deep water at mid tides makes it great windsurfing territory. The club also has an active RIB section which organises outings to Scotland and the Isle of Man, and charitable events.
The club is an RYA Recognised Training Centre and in association with Newtownards Sail Traing Club offers courses for RYA qualifications in dinghy sailing (kids and adults), windsurfing, and powerboating. Courses for RYA Yachtmaster/Day Skipper etc are also run at the club.
The clubhouse has recently been redeveloped and boasts state of the art pressurised showers in its spacious changing rooms, and an upstairs bar with marvellous views over Strangford Lough. |
